I am level 12 and only producing an avg of 70 damage each hit, I feel I am far weaker than I should be.
Any advice?

On a serious note: Just get better gear. It costs a lot but it's worth it. You can also use orbs to increase the damage of a single attack (a must-use for serious combats) or balms and food to increase your stats.
