Okay it's telling me to kill monsters to get spark things to upgrade my magic, but i've killed a ton of monsters and haven't gotten a single one. What do I do to upgrade my magic?

try the mobs in outskirts of sadar.
and yes those spark things are rare drops, if you would like to skip the agony of hunting mobs down for them, you could buy em off from ah instead.
