So I assume if you have too high of a level in a group the drops could be nil for all?

pretty much...so if you have a level 70 as a group leader and a level 30 in that group, then the 30 killing mobs will have reduced damage. However, exp gain will be the same.
I think the money aspect may be reduced but not 100% sure.
