I defeated Garuug this morning...he dropped his sack & ran...but I can't locate his sack in my backpack...

It took you longer than 3 minutes of allocated time to kill him is why you haven't received the spoils. As Garuug must be cought and killed within this timelimit to receive the reward bag.
