spirit for the rod of valet

in this quest it says to charge the rod with souls from arena of honor,seven bridges, tournament of honor or bonecrusher spheres. so i bought 5 bonecrusher spheres to do quest and it didn't work. used the rod for death blow and no soul credit. it cost me 2 gold 50 silver. ???

KRAWL,
the chance to charge the Rod is not 100%, that is, you may not get exactly five souls for 5 blows.

Hideki, thanks for that insight, but is it really supposed to be as low as 10% of kills? that seems to be my average...bought at least 15 bc spheres and only have 1 more soul collected and I know I've done deathblows w/ rod at least 15 times since getting quest in arenas. This seems a little absurd. I can't get my last one and I'm almost outta money and nobody's in arenas...
