For some reason the essence calculator needs to be fixed.
I have encountered this dozens of times.
Today, I used my fire spell twice - (104 *2) *2 = 416 - so 4 essences! but i got only 3

you should find that over several fights it will even out to 1 per 100 mana.....

Hellsing,
when you will use it 10 times, it all will even up, as essence drop is not 1 very single time, at times is up to 5 ;)

so- does it mean that even if i use 100 mana - i might not get essence smtimes?

Does the reward reduction from fighting something lower level than yourself affect the essence drop rate? I have noticed a radically reduced drop of essence when fighting mobs 6+ levels less. I am not complaining, mind you, I am just curious.
